Barcelona's Eight Players Headed to 2026 World Cup

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico with 48 nations taking part for the first time. Barcelona will send 16 players to the tournament, one fewer than the record set in 2022. Lionel Messi will line up for Argentina in his sixth World Cup, which is expected to be his final appearance after lifting the trophy in 2022. His participation adds a veteran presence to the Argentine squad. Spain will field eight Barcelona representatives, matching the 2022 count. The eight are Joan Garcia, Eric Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Pedri, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres and Lamine Yamal, with only Eric Garcia, Gavi, Pedri and Ferran Torres returning from the previous tournament. Joan Garcia joins Luis de la Fuente’s roster as the goalkeeper, arriving as a late addition after Alex Remiro’s omission. His inclusion marks a milestone for the young shot‑stopper. Eric Garcia’s versatility allows him to operate at right‑back or centre‑back, and he is expected to log regular minutes throughout the competition. His development since 2022 has silenced early doubts about his World Cup worthiness. Pau Cubarsi, aged 19, is described as one of the finest young defenders in world football and is likely to start for Spain. His composure, positioning and line‑breaking passes align with Luis de la Fuente’s tactical plan. Pedri arrives as the midfield heartbeat for both Barcelona and Spain after emerging at Euro 2020 and overcoming injury setbacks. His role will be central if Spain aims to progress deep into the tournament. Gavi’s intensity, aggression and relentless energy make him indispensable when fit, though he may feature mainly off the bench. His performances have consistently highlighted his uniqueness among his generation. Dani Olmo enters the World Cup as one of Spain’s most experienced attacking options, offering intelligence between the lines and a keen eye for goal. Fermin Lopez was ruled out of the tournament, as noted in the accompanying photograph. Luis de la Fuente will direct the Spanish side, with Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres completing the Barcelona contingent. Photo credits for the article go to David Ramos and Alex Caparros.
