Barcelona's goalkeeper plans hinge on Szczesny's future
Barcelona need a reliable backup goalkeeper after Joan Garcia cemented the number one spot last summer, leaving Marc‑Andre Ter Stegen on the periphery. With the German struggling for form and fitness, the club’s plans now revolve around Wojciech Szczesny’s role beside Garcia.
Joan Garcia arrived last summer and immediately took over as Barcelona’s first‑choice goalkeeper, delivering rock‑solid performances throughout the campaign. His impact pushed Marc‑Andre Ter Stegen into a fringe role, especially as the German struggled with form and fitness.
Looking ahead to the new season, Barcelona intend to move the captain out of the squad and plan to rely on Wojciech Szczesny as Garcia’s deputy. Szczesny’s future therefore becomes the decisive factor in any further goalkeeping recruitment.
Mundo Deportivo the club will only pursue a new signing if Szczesny departs or proves unable to serve as an effective backup due to age. In that scenario, Alex Remiro emerges as Barcelona’s preferred option to strengthen the position.
Remiro is set to become a free agent next summer, meaning Barcelona could acquire him without a transfer fee and on more favourable terms. His current contract with Real Sociedad will expire, and the club believes negotiations will be smoother once he is free to negotiate.
At present, the likelihood of a drastic change in Szczesny’s status is low, and the manager has expressed full confidence in him as Garcia’s backup. Consequently, Barcelona will monitor the situation and may only act on Remiro’s move when the Polish goalkeeper’s future becomes uncertain.
