Barcelona's No.9 quest: Álvarez's preference meets €130m price gap

🇪🇸

Barcelona are hunting a long‑term No.9 to replace the departing Robert Lewandowski, and Argentine forward Julián Álvarez, 26, has emerged as the prime target. The club is prepared to offer around €130‑140 million, but Atlético Madrid’s €500 million release clause looms as the main obstacle.

Transfer reporter Matteo Moretto confirmed that Julián Álvarez’s camp has stated a clear preference for a move to Barcelona over any interest from PSG or Arsenal. The agent Fernando Hidalgo has told both English clubs that negotiations are now centred solely on the Blaugrana.

Barcelona are reportedly working toward a bid in the region of €130‑140 million for Álvarez. Atlético Madrid, however, have insisted the Argentine is not for sale and that only his €500 million release clause would trigger a contractual move.

Álvarez joined Atlético Madrid from Manchester City for around €95 million two summers ago and has been a consistent performer since. His public comments about wanting to leave to “fulfil his dream” were widely interpreted as pointing toward the Camp Nou.

With Lewandowski set to depart, Barcelona have already agreed the Anthony Gordon deal as part of a post‑Lewandowski overhaul. Sporting director Deco is waiting for a definitive green light from Hansi Flick before any formal approach to Atlético is made.

PSG have identified Álvarez as one of their main summer targets and were understood to be preparing an initial offer. Argentine journalist Gastón Edul placed the probability of a Barcelona move at 45 percent, PSG at 35 percent and Arsenal at 20 percent.

PSG remain the only club reported to have signalled readiness to meet Atlético’s financial demands, giving the Spanish side leverage to resist a below‑market offer. The player’s stated preference does not compel Atlético to sell, especially to a direct league rival.

A pending FIFA complaint adds procedural complexity to Barcelona’s pursuit of Álvarez. Until the dispute is resolved or set aside, the fee gap and Atlético’s release clause remain the central obstacles.

Barcelona will need either Atlético’s willingness to negotiate below the €500 million threshold or a formal bid that forces a response. With Hansi Flick’s squad‑planning sign‑off still pending, the timeline for any concrete move remains uncertain.
