Barcelona's Salinas deal stalls over €8m‑€16m clause

Barcelona have secured personal terms with Spanish defender Jorge Salinas but the transfer is stalled as Racing Santander and the Catalan club disagree on whether the player's release clause is €8 million or €16 million following Racing’s promotion to La Liga this season.

Racing argue that the clause automatically doubled to €16 million once the club secured promotion, meaning any interested side must meet the higher figure. Barcelona, backed by Salinas’ representatives, contend that official La Liga status only begins on 1 July, keeping the €8 million clause in force until 30 June.

The clubs consider the release‑clause dispute the primary hurdle to finalising the move. Should they reach agreement on the fee, negotiations will shift to the payment method, with options ranging from full cash to a package involving academy players.

One academy player cited is Jan Virgili, currently at RCD Mallorca, on whom Barcelona retain a buy‑back clause. Virgili has been mentioned as a possible component of the deal, though no decision has been taken.

Meanwhile, Salinas has joined Spain’s Under‑19 national team ahead of the UEFA European Under‑19 Championship in Wales. The tournament opens against hosts Wales, followed by matches with Denmark and Germany, and could keep him occupied until mid‑July if Spain advance.

Barcelona remain optimistic, noting that Salinas impressed during Racing’s promotion campaign and is regarded as one of Spain’s most promising young defenders. The club plans to slot him directly into Flick’s first‑team squad for the preseason.

Other Spanish clubs, including Villarreal and Atletico Madrid, continue to monitor the situation closely. Barcelona believes its early agreement with the player gives it the strongest position to secure the transfer.

Resolving the interpretation of the release clause remains the immediate priority before any further steps can be taken.
