Barcelona seek to offload captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen this summer
Barcelona are finding it difficult to part ways with captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen this summer because his contract runs to 2028 and he commands one of the club’s highest salaries, Flick’s plans, with Joan Garcia now the first‑choice keeper.
Ter Stegen’s contract runs to 2028 and his wage is among the highest at Barcelona. The club’s salary balance was already eased by Robert Lewandowski’s exit, which freed significant space. Barça view the case as one of Deco’s most difficult transfer challenges this summer.
Ajax have shown interest, with Michel slated to become the Dutch side’s coach next season. Michel previously worked with Ter Stegen during his loan at Girona and values the German’s experience and leadership.
A likely arrangement would be a loan in which Barcelona continues to shoulder a large portion of the goalkeeper’s salary. A contract termination with compensation is also mentioned, but with two years left on the deal it appears unlikely.
Hansi Flick is counting on Joan Garcia as his first‑choice goalkeeper. Wojciech Szczesny is expected to remain as the second option between the posts.
Ter Stegen is reportedly more willing to find a solution than he was last summer. He acknowledges that he is not in Flick’s plans and wants to feel like a footballer again.
If Ajax can guarantee playing time, status and a familiar coach, Barcelona may still need to contribute to his wages to complete the move. The accompanying photo is credited to Alex Caparros.
