Belgium breaks the curse after 50 years of defeats

In the cool light of the stadium one could hear the murmuring of the fans as Mark van Bommel made his debut as the Belgian national coach. In the 2‑0 win over Italy his team also secured the first competitive win against the Squadra Azzurra since 1972 – a moment that seemed to break the decades‑long curse.

First half dominated, second act reshaped

Van Bommel said at his press conference that he was very satisfied with the start. He emphasized that Belgium had been training with high intensity since Monday and that the instructions were well implemented in the game. The team played in a 4‑3‑3 and, according to the coach, controlled especially the first half.

After the break Italy increased the pressure, but Belgian substitutions brought fresh impetus. The goals were scored by Mika Godts and Dodi Lukebakio, with Van Bommel especially praising Godts for his dribbling.

Historically the success was remarkable: Since a 2‑1 win in May 1972 Belgium had not recorded a competitive victory over Italy. Kevin De Bruyne was also highlighted; Van Bommel called him one of the best players in the history of Belgian football.

The coach stressed that not only the starting eleven was decisive and that several players could make the difference. For the next match against France he announced changes, while Leandro Trossard will continue to miss out due to a heel injury.
