Belgium Heads to 2026 World Cup with De Bruyne Leading

Belgium enter the 2026 FIFA World Cup ranked ninth globally. Coach Rudi Garcia leads a side captained by Youri Tielemans. Kevin De Bruyne, now 34, operates as a number 10 after his move to Napoli. The 26‑man squad includes goalkeepers Thibaut Courtois, Senne Lammens and Mike Penders. Defenders Timothy Castagne, Zeno Debast, Maxim De Cuyper, Koni De Winter, Brandon Mechele, Thomas Meunier, Nathan Ngoy, Joaquin Seys and Arthur Theate complete the back line. Midfielders Kevin De Bruyne, Amadou Onana, Nicolas Raskin, Hans Vanaken and Axel Witsel, plus forwards Charles De Ketelaere, Jeremy Doku, Matias Fernandez-Pardo, Romelu Lukaku, Dodi Lukebakio, Diego Moreira, Alexis Saelemaekers and Leandro Trossard complete the attacking options. De Bruyne brings a passing range and match intelligence few players match. Jeremy Doku recorded 21 goal contributions in 50 games this season and adds explosive acceleration. Amadou Onana and Tielemans replicate their Aston Villa partnership, giving Garcia a physically dominant yet technically gifted midfield engine. Romelu Lukaku logged only about an hour of competitive football this season, scored once for Napoli, and therefore arrives on reputation rather than form. The defensive line, aside from Courtois, relies on a young centre‑back partnership whose solidity against elite attackers remains unproven. Analysts predict a 4‑3‑3 starting XI of Courtois; Meunier, Mechele, Theate, Castagne; Tielemans, De Bruyne, Witsel; Trossard, Lukaku and Doku, with Garcia able to shift to a 4‑2‑3‑1 if needed. Belgium draws Group G with Egypt, Iran and New Zealand, a group most analysts deem winnable. Garcia’s side is expected to top Group G and reach the quarter‑finals with reasonable comfort. A semi‑final run could materialise if Lukaku regains form, but defensive frailties and an ageing spine suggest the 2018 third‑place finish remains the realistic ceiling. The squad possesses individual quality comparable to England, yet tournament football punishes inconsistency and the numerous fitness questions temper confidence.
