Belgium held again as World Cup 2026 group fears grow

🇧🇪 yesterday
Belgium remain in limbo after two World Cup 2026 group-stage draws against Egypt and Iran. The Red Devils now need a result against New Zealand on Matchday 3 to secure their place in the knockout phase. Belgium’s campaign has drawn sharp criticism from domestic media over their unconvincing displays in Group E. Belgium’s opening 0-0 draw with Egypt set the tone for a frustrating start. A second stalemate, 1-1 against Iran, left Roberto Martínez’s side with just one point from two games. The Belgian press has labelled the group as the weakest at the tournament, yet the team has failed to capitalise. Roberto Martínez admitted his side must improve urgently. “What are we actually doing here?” he told reporters after the Iran game. “We need to be sharper, more clinical, and show the quality we know we have.” Belgium’s next opponent, New Zealand, has already been eliminated mathematically. A win would guarantee Belgium progression regardless of other results. A draw or defeat could send them home early despite facing the lowest-ranked team in the group. The Red Devils have managed just two goals in two games, both scored by Romelu Lukaku. Belgium’s attack has been toothless, with Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne struggling to influence proceedings. Midfield creativity has been notably absent in both matches. Group E standings show Iran top with two points, ahead of Egypt on one. Belgium sit third, level on points with New Zealand but with a superior goal difference. The final group fixtures kick off on 29 November 2026. Belgian outlets have questioned the team’s mentality and tactical approach. “This is not the Belgium we know,” wrote Het . “They look lost, without ideas, and lacking the hunger to dominate.” Martínez has rotated his squad heavily, with 11 different players starting either game. Youth players such as Johan Bakayoko and Charles De Ketelaere have been handed opportunities, but results have not followed. The pressure on Martínez is intensifying with each uninspiring display. Belgium’s World Cup 2026 campaign risks ending in embarrassment if they fail to beat New Zealand. A defeat would make them the first European side to crash out of the group stage at a World Cup since 2010. The Belgian FA has reiterated its backing for Martínez despite the mounting criticism. A statement read: “We trust the process and believe in the squad’s ability to turn things around.”
