Belgium vs Iran in LA as city declares emergency over fire

Belgium's national team will meet Iran at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Sunday evening at 21:00, despite a city‑wide state of emergency declared after a massive warehouse fire in Boyle Heights has forced hundreds of firefighters to battle toxic smoke for four days.

The fire erupted on Wednesday inside a large refrigerated warehouse in Boyle Heights. Flames have ignited insulation material, solar panels and a possible ammonia release, and the blaze remains unextinguished after four days.

Local authorities have instructed residents to remain indoors and keep windows closed. Emergency shelters operating day and night have been set up for people most affected by the smoke.

Organisers confirm that the Belgium‑Iran match at SoFi Stadium will proceed with no alterations to the schedule. Main arterial roads around the stadium stay open, allowing teams, supporters and media to reach the venue without delay.

Los Angeles hosts the largest Iranian community outside Iran, often referred to as “Tehrangeles.” A segment of this diaspora previously demonstrated outside the stadium during Belgium’s opening match against New Zealand.

Thomas Meunier said, “Il faut voir le côté positif,” refusing to panic ahead of the duel with Iran. His comment was made on the day of the match, emphasizing a positive mindset despite the fire.

The game will be streamed live on Walfoot.be starting at 21:00. Authorities continue to monitor air quality and advise avoiding outdoor activities when possible.

Spectators already gathered inside the stadium are expected to watch the match as planned. The kickoff will be given at the scheduled time, under the watchful eyes of officials and fans.
