Bochum coach Rösler fumes after opening 0-1 defeat to Hertha
VfL Bochum opened their 2. Bundesliga campaign with a 0-1 home loss to Hertha BSC, handing the Berlin side three points on the first matchday. The solitary goal proved enough to snuff out any early optimism that had surrounded the Ruhr club after a busy transfer window.
Head coach Uwe Rösler was visibly irritated during his post‑match interview with Sky Sport, rejecting any suggestion that Hertha’s win was deserved. “If you say that was deserved for Hertha, you weren’t here at the game,” he snapped when asked whether the visitors had earned their lead.
Rösler went on to challenge the reporter’s assessment of the match’s balance, pointing to the statistics he believed proved parity. “How many chances did they create in the first 55 minutes? One and a half. How many did we create over 90 minutes? Two and a half. Six! Six chances for us,” he argued, implying that Bochum had been the more threatening side.
He also blamed a defensive lapse for the lone goal, noting that the concession came after a “own error” and that the second half was “clearly ours” but that his side failed to capitalise on the opportunities they generated.
The frustration extended beyond the scoreline. Rösler complained that the added time was far too short, citing four Hertha players lying on the ground as evidence. “That’s almost two minutes. You can’t carry someone off that quickly, so the two minutes were far too short,” he told the officials after the final whistle.
Despite the disappointment, Rösler insisted the defeat would serve as a wake‑up call. “We have to learn from this, improve our finishing and be more disciplined defensively,” he said, promising a stronger response in the next fixture.
The loss leaves Bochum in the lower half of the table after the first round, while Hertha takes an early step toward promotion ambitions. All eyes will now turn to how quickly Rösler can translate his anger into tangible improvements on the pitch.
