Boos erupt as Trump joins Spain on World Cup podium

By 4All Football Editorial ·

The boos that greeted former US President Donald Trump as he stepped onto the podium with captain Rodri underscored the public’s disapproval of his presence at Spain’s World Cup 2026 celebration. The incident unfolded at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium after Spain lifted the trophy following a 1‑0 extra‑time win over Argentina.

The final, billed as Spain v Argentina LIVE, was watched live worldwide and attracted a packed New Jersey crowd. Both sides entered the second half level, but the atmosphere soured after full‑time when tempers flared.

Argentina were reduced to ten men after Enzo Fernandez received a red card, and a second dismissal came when Leandro Paredes was sent off at full‑time for an alleged assault on Eric Garcia. In extra time, Ferran Torres broke the deadlock in the 106th minute, securing a 1‑0 win for Spain.

The US president attended the match, seated beside FIFA president Gianni Infantino to watch the final. Trump was positioned behind bullet‑proof glass with First Lady Melania Trump and son Barron Trump also present.

As the final whistle blew, Trump joined captain Rodri on the podium and helped present the World Cup 2026 trophy to the Spanish side. Audible boos lifted stadium noise from 78 to 84 decibels, prompting FIFA president Gianni Infantino to subtly move Trump away from the centre of the photo.

Trump then walked onto the pitch, shaking hands with guests including Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund governor Yasir Al‑Rumayyan and Newcastle United chairman, and handed the runners‑up medal to Lionel Messi before exiting amid continued jeers.

Trump had previously appeared at the same venue for a FIFA ceremony when Chelsea won the FIFA Club World Cup, standing beside Reece James during the celebrations. That earlier appearance demonstrated his interest in high‑profile football events.
