Bosz blames early red card for PSV's 0-4 defeat to AZ in Johan Cruijff Schaal
PSV Eindhoven suffered a heavy 0-4 loss to AZ Alkmaar in the Johan Cruijff Schaal, with head coach Peter Bosz attributing the result largely to a red card shown just five minutes into the match. The early dismissal, Bosz said, "had a huge impact" and forced his side to play the majority of the game a man down.
The Dutch coach explained that the timing of the sending‑off left PSV with little chance to recover, noting that the team had to reorganise defensively while still trying to maintain an attacking threat. "If you get a red card after five minutes, everyone understands that it changes the whole dynamic," Bosz told reporters.
Bosz also speculated on how the match might have unfolded under normal circumstances. He argued that the eleven players he had selected were capable of beating AZ, stating, "The eleven we had should have won against AZ. It stayed 0-4, so it never got out of hand." He suggested that without the dismissal, PSV could have contested the game more effectively.
During the press conference, Bosz was challenged by a journalist who implied that PSV should have simply shut down the game after falling 0-2. Bosz rejected that notion, calling it "a strange thought" and insisting that even at 0-2 the team should have continued to push for a comeback. "At 0-2 I would not have given up, that is a strange idea," he said.
The coach also highlighted the lack of cohesion and missed chances that plagued PSV after the red card, acknowledging that the team struggled to create clear scoring opportunities. He praised a few individual performances but admitted that the overall tactical execution fell short of expectations.
Looking ahead, Bosz emphasized the need for a swift response in the upcoming Eredivisie fixtures. He urged his squad to learn from the defeat, restore confidence, and focus on regaining momentum in the league campaign. "We have to bounce back quickly and show what PSV is capable of," he concluded.
