Bradford's defensive upgrade: why Gillesphey fits the club's plan

🇬🇧

Bradford City have secured the services of 30‑year‑old defender Macaulay Gillesphey from Charlton Athletic on a two‑year contract for an undisclosed fee, completing the July 2026 signing. The former Newcastle academy product, who featured in 96 league games for the Addicks and scored twice in 38 appearances last season, joins the club as they look to bolster their back line.

Bradford City manager Graham Alexander praised Gillesphey as a very good defender with excellent ability in possession. He added that the player’s determination to join the club matched Bradford’s ambition. Alexander said those attributes will help the team progress in the league.

Gillesphey began his professional journey in the Newcastle academy. He later helped Plymouth claim the League One title. At Charlton Athletic he contributed to the promotion campaign that saw the Addicks rise to the Championship via the 2025 play‑offs.

The 30‑year‑old amassed 96 league appearances for Charlton Athletic. He also recorded two goals across 38 total appearances in all competitions last season. His consistent playing time underscores his readiness for a regular role at Bradford City.

For Bradford City, the signing adds depth to a defence that aims to improve stability. Gillesphey gains a two‑year platform to establish himself in English football’s lower tiers. Both sides anticipate mutual benefit as the club seeks defensive solidity and the player embraces a fresh challenge.
