Bristol Rovers sign Irish defender Ciaran Kelly on two-year deal

Bristol Rovers have secured the services of 27-year-old Irish centre-back Ciaran Kelly on a two-year contract, signing the free-agent after his release from Bradford City where he made 94 appearances over a three-and-a-half-year spell.

Kelly departed Bradford City at the end of the season following his release. He featured in the Bradford side that achieved promotion to League One last season.

Before moving to England, Kelly played in his native Republic of Ireland for Bohemians, Ballymena United and St Patrick's.

"My patience has finally paid off and I am really happy to sign Ciaran," manager Steve Evans said on the club website. Evans added that Kelly is a commanding centre-back, a true professional and a real competitor.

Evans noted that Kelly had a variety of options this summer, including interest from several Scottish Premier League clubs. He expressed delight that Kelly chose Bristol Rovers over those possibilities.

Kelly becomes the sixth new signing for Rovers this summer as Evans reshapes the squad. The manager is aiming to improve on the League Two safety the club secured last season.

At 27, Kelly brings considerable experience to the Rovers' back line. His three-and-a-half-year tenure at Bradford City included nearly a century of league appearances.
