Carlos Espí leads Sub‑21’s historic thrashing
The Spanish under‑21 football team defeated San Marino 0‑13 this Thursday, and Real Madrid striker Carlos Espí shone with a historic performance by scoring five goals in his first start. He also added two assists and celebrated the milestone with his teammates.
A night of records for the striker
Espí scored five goals, becoming the first player in the history of the 'Rojita' to achieve a 'repóker' in a single match. He did it in his second appearance as an international at this level and in his first start, showing great efficiency inside the box. «The truth is that it’s a special night. I was really eager to be here, to help the team and I’m very happy», said the Real Madrid striker.
In addition, the Valencian added two assists, helping his teammates also find the net and contributing to the hefty scoreline. He thanked the recognition, saying that the pride belonged to the whole squad and dedicated his feat to his family and friends, who have always supported him.
The team responds and looks to the future
The under‑21 coach, David Gordo, praised Espí’s work and emphasized that he had fulfilled his task of scoring and creating chances for others. He also highlighted the performance of Málaga full‑back Rafita, who delivered a very good game in his debut with the under‑21s, providing defensive solidity.
After the loss to Finland, Gordo, representing the Spanish FA, stressed that the group had responded with hunger and determination to turn the situation around. The coach said they wanted to win from the first minute and that they played with great respect for the opponent, maintaining intensity throughout the ninety minutes.
Spain will finish the qualifying phase in Ibiza next Tuesday the 6th, facing Romania in a decisive match for the Euro spot. To secure direct qualification, a win or even a draw is enough, as the team holds a nine‑goal advantage over Finland, the second‑placed side with two points fewer.
The contrast between the historic thrashing and the pressure to maintain the lead shows the solidity and ambition of the under‑21 squad, which does not rest after the success. With Espí’s confidence and the backing of the coaching staff, the 'Rojita' is shaping up as one of the favorites to qualify without setbacks.
