Celtic fans decry Monday night kickoff and flag unfurling

Celtic supporters criticised the decision to start the Scottish Premiership season on Monday 3 August with a 7:30 pm kickoff against Dundee, calling the evening flag unfurling ‘ridiculous’ and demanding that champions always play first. Fans argued the timing undermines tradition and forces supporters to attend a late‑night ceremony.

Ray said unfurling the flag on Monday evening is ridiculous. He added that the champions of any league should always play first.

Eddie noted a Commonwealth cycling event is scheduled for the same day and suggested the season be delayed a week. He argued this would allow the champions to unfurl the flag at 3.00 pm, as is tradition.

Tam said he is not too bothered by a Monday night kickoff but does not understand why the champions do not start the new season. He asked whether they used to do so in the past.

Tom claimed the SPFL and SFA can create a disadvantage for Celtic and warned they will act to that effect. He insisted schedules should be made in conjunction with the league’s major club rather than as an afterthought.

Edward suggested the timing is another snub to Celtic fans and the board, delaying decisions on Martin O'Neill’s backroom staff. He also mentioned on‑field talent like Iheanacho and Oxlade-Chamberlain being left unaware of their futures as the 7:30 pm flag unfurling approaches.

Martin described the SPFL’s scheduling as thoughtful but noted it makes it even more difficult for Irish fans to enjoy the occasion. He implied the fixture timing adds another layer of inconvenience for supporters travelling from Ireland.
