Chelsea's dilemma: Is Andrey Santos a sellable asset this summer?

🇬🇧

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso faces a decision on 22‑year‑old Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos, whose contract runs until 2030 but whose first‑team role is uncertain next season, prompting speculation that the West London club may look to cash in during the summer transfer window.

Santos featured in 43 matches across all competitions last season, scoring three goals and providing four assists in the Premier League. The 22‑year‑old Brazilian is regarded as one of the Premier League’s most promising young midfielders. A photograph by Shaun Botterill captured him celebrating a goal against Tottenham Hotspur on May 19, 2026 at Stamford Bridge.

He primarily operates as a box‑to‑box midfielder but can also be deployed as a defensive midfielder, using his tackling, long‑range shooting and vision to create chances. His ability to dribble and time challenges adds versatility to Chelsea’s midfield options.

Despite his contributions, the Brazilian is not guaranteed regular minutes under Alonso next campaign, leading to speculation that he may seek a move for more playing time. This uncertainty makes his future a focal point in the club’s summer planning.

Chelsea have not ruled out selling him, and a potential transfer could generate funds to reinforce other areas, given his contract does not expire until 2030. The club therefore faces no immediate pressure to offload him this off‑season.

Alonso could retain Santos for another season to reassess his development before deciding on a sale next summer. Alternatively, agreeing a summer departure now would allow the Blues to use the proceeds to address squad deficiencies.

If negotiations progress, the timing of any deal will depend on the player’s contract terms and market interest, while the club monitors his involvement in preseason training.
