Conings criticizes Belgium's opening phase against Egypt

Belgium tactical analyst Wim Conings criticized the national team's poor start in their World Cup opener against Egypt. "The overlapping full-backs are a key strength in Belgium’s attack, but against Egypt they were completely absent in the opening phase," he said.

Conings highlighted the absence of the usual attacking runs from both full-back positions as a major issue. "Belgium’s width in attack relies on those overlapping runs, but against Egypt they didn’t dare to push forward," he added.

The analyst emphasized the need for Belgium to regain their attacking identity early in matches. "You can’t afford to start slow against top opponents. The first 15 minutes set the tone," Conings stated.

He also pointed to Egypt’s defensive structure as a factor in Belgium’s struggles. "Egypt sat deep and absorbed pressure well. Belgium lacked the creativity to break them down," he explained.

Conings’ analysis underscores concerns about Belgium’s adaptability in big games. "They need to be more flexible in how they approach matches," he concluded.
