Corinthians reverse stance, seal two‑year deal with Memphis Depay

A two-year contract extension has been reached between Dutch international Memphis Depay and Brazilian side Corinthians, reversing a decision announced a week earlier that his deal would not be renewed. The agreement includes a salary reduction that makes the contract viable for the club.

Club’s earlier stance and financial concerns

De Braziliaanse club announced a week ago that the contract of the Oranje-international would not be extended, citing chairman Osmar Stabile’s view that keeping Memphis longer was ‘financially too risky’. The statement left the striker furious, as he believed an agreement had already been secured.

Depay threatened to take steps against the club, and the dispute quickly drew in fans and sponsors who voiced their opinions on the matter. The public pressure contributed to a shift in the chairman’s position.

Stabile responded by returning to the negotiating table with Memphis’s representatives, and talks progressed rapidly. Within days, both parties reported that a definitive decision had been reached.

The new deal is a two-year extension, with the only remaining formalities being the signatures of the chairman and the player. Under the revised terms, Depay will earn less than before, a concession that enabled Corinthians to approve the contract.

Memphis is expected to report to training with Corinthians later this week, marking the end of a turbulent week for both the player and the club.
