Cristian Romero suffers recurring knee injury in Argentina’s win over Austria
Argentina defender Cristian Romero left the pitch against Austria with a recurring knee problem. The same knee was injured shortly before the World Cup. Argentina won the match 2-0.
Romero’s discomfort emerged during the Group C fixture in Vienna. He had previously missed the final two months of the Premier League season with Tottenham Hotspur due to the same injury, sustained in April against Brian Brobbey.
The defender remains hopeful of recovery. "I knew this could happen. I felt a bit of pain, but in three or four days it will be fine. It’s nothing serious," Romero told reporters after the game.
Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni confirmed Romero will not play the next group game against Jordan. "He will not feature in the next match and will rest," journalist Gastón Edul wrote on X.

Romero has been a regular starter for Argentina in recent years. At the 2022 World Cup, he played nearly every minute, and he started both of Argentina’s opening two games in 2026. With Lionel Messi absent, Romero captained the side. "He will not feature in the next match and will rest," journalist Gastón Edul wrote on X. Romero’s fitness is now under scrutiny ahead of potential knockout-stage involvement. Argentina lead Group C with six points from two games and face Jordan on Friday.
