Crystal Palace eye Ainsley Maitland-Niles as Lyon deal looms
Crystal Palace are weighing a move for 28‑year‑old Ainsley Maitland‑Niles as his Lyon contract approaches its final year. The midfielder‑full‑back, who has featured 42 times last season and contributed six goals and assists for Lyon, could join the Selhurst Park side this summer.
Palace manager Pierre Sage knows Maitland‑Niles from their time together at Olympique Lyonnais. That familiarity may reduce risk as Sage is aware of the player’s habits, strengths and limitations.
Maitland‑Niles joined Lyon on a free transfer in 2023. He has amassed 115 appearances for the French club, with 42 outings last season.
His ability to operate in midfield, at full‑back and in disciplined roles adds tactical flexibility. Palace seek players who can provide technical security without relying on flashy statistics.
Maitland‑Niles’ Lyon contract expires at the end of the next season, making a summer move plausible. A transfer would give Palace experience, versatility and a player accustomed to a demanding French environment.
Before Lyon, Maitland‑Niles’ Arsenal pathway narrowed, with loan spells failing to revive his momentum. A stint at Southampton coincided with a difficult period for both player and club.
