Crystal Palace’s gamble on Elliott as Liverpool’s new era unfolds
Harvey Elliott, the 23‑year‑old Liverpool midfielder, is being linked with a move to Crystal Palace after his stalled £35 million permanent transfer to Aston Villa fell through, under‑21 international could join the Europa Conference League champions as they reshape their squad.
Crystal Palace have identified Elliott as a target in their summer transfer refit under new manager Pierre Sage. The club, Europa Conference League champions, are monitoring his situation at Liverpool and see him as a potential addition to strengthen either wide or midfield positions.
Andoni Iraola, announced as Arne Slot’s successor at Liverpool, has pledged a fresh start for his squad during their first preseason together. With several players absent due to the FIFA World Cup, Iraola and sporting director Richard Hughes will decide on the futures of those given a lifeline, including Elliott.
Elliott joined Liverpool as a teenager following the club’s UEFA Champions League triumph in 2019. He has been part of two Premier League title‑winning squads but has struggled to become a regular starter under previous coaches.
Last season Elliott moved to Aston Villa on loan with the intention of completing a permanent £35 million transfer. However, manager Unai Emery acted to avoid the obligation, leaving Elliott’s move unfinished and his season described as wasted.
The report states, “Palace are also understood to be monitoring Harvey Elliott’s situation at Liverpool,” and adds, “Elliott will be given the chance to stake his claim in the Liverpool squad under new head coach Andoni Iraola.” Should he fail to convince the new head coach, a move back south to Crystal Palace could be imminent.
