Curacao claim first World Cup point in 0-0 draw with Ecuador

In Kansas City, Curacao secured its first-ever World Cup point by holding Ecuador to a 0-0 stalemate. Goalkeeper Eloy Room made 15 saves, one shy of Tim Howard's World Cup record, as the Blue Wave celebrated the historic draw in the group stage. Curacao, a nation of about 150,000 people, became the smallest country ever to qualify for a World Cup. The team also reached the tournament unbeaten in CONCACAF qualifying, without the United States, Mexico or Canada participating. Lionel Messi and the Argentina squad were also in Kansas City, adding to the tournament atmosphere. Fan Jean, dressed head‑to‑toe in blue, said the nation united behind the Blue Wave after qualification. "We're a small country but because we qualified for the World Cup, you saw the whole country unite and everyone become one," he told reporters before kickoff. Tahith Chong, a native‑born player, progressed from the Manchester United academy to the Premier League with Luton Town. He also spent his youth at Feyenoord, making him Curacao's most influential outfield player in the match against Ecuador. The remaining 25 squad members were all born in the Netherlands, many with Dutch youth caps. Eighteen represented the Netherlands at youth level, while Riechedly Bazoer and Joshua Brenet have already appeared for the Dutch senior team. Seventy‑eight‑year‑old Dick Advocaat, former Netherlands manager, returned to coach Curacao after a brief leave due to his daughter's illness. He is expected to step down after the World Cup, leaving a legacy as a Curacao football legend. Curacao's next challenge is against Ivory Coast on Thursday, with a win and an Ecuador loss or draw against Germany offering a route to the knockout stage. Four points would also place the team in a strong position to qualify as one of the best third‑placed sides.
