Deniz Undav’s brace secures Germany’s 2‑1 World Cup win
Deniz Undav netted a brace after entering at halftime to help Germany overturn Ivory Coast 2‑1 in the World Cup Group E clash in Toronto on Saturday, June 20 2026, securing the Germans’ place in the knockout phase. His second strike arrived four minutes into stoppage time, a finish from Felix Nmecha’s pass.
Nadiem Amiri delivered a long ball that found Undav eight minutes after both entered the field, and the striker converted it at the 68th minute to give Germany the lead. Kai Havertz let the ball pass him by during the build‑up.
Ivory Coast captain Franck Kessie opened the scoring in the 30th minute after Yan Diomande crossed to Amad Diallo. Nathaniel Brown blocked Diallo’s shot, the rebound fell to Kessie, who slotted the ball into the left corner.
Germany saw two goals disallowed in the first half. In the 21st minute, a potential own goal by Yahia Fofana was ruled out after Aleksander Pavlovic made illegal contact with the goalkeeper, and in the 38th minute Jamal Musiala was penalised for a foul that nullified a build‑up that would have seen Kai Havertz score.
The four‑time champion Germany have previously suffered group‑stage exits in 2018 and 2022. Their last progression beyond the group stage came when they won the tournament in 2014.
Ivory Coast remain in pursuit of their first knockout‑stage appearance and still have a chance to qualify. Their campaign thus far has kept the possibility alive.
Striker Elye Wahi, under investigation for alleged betting‑related offences from his time at Nice, was absent after a court battle to gain entry to Canada. The Ivory Coast forward did not feature in the match.
