Denzel Dumfries urges Netherlands to match Inter intensity

Denzel Dumfries told the Netherlands squad ahead of their World Cup campaign that they must emulate the direct, confrontational culture of Inter Milan’s dressing room, warning that a comfortable group dynamic could limit what Koeman’s side can achieve. He emphasized the need for more peer‑to‑peer accountability and a little fire in the team. Speaking to ahead of the World Cup, Dumfries said: “We need to demand more from each other. This is the lesson we learned from the last European Championship, as a group we can tell each other the truth more often and more openly. And I will do that, because I am someone who takes responsibility in that sense. A little fire in the team is important.” The outgoing Nerazzurri right‑back spent four years at Inter Milan, winning domestic trophies and reaching a Champions League final, while working daily alongside Lautaro Martínez, Nicolò Barella and Hakan Çalhanoğlu. He described Inter’s environment as one where “we can clash hard with each other, but there are so many strong personalities and firm opinions that you are practically forced to assert yourself,” contrasting it with the Dutch national team’s “very pleasant group, with a lot of spontaneity and positivity, but every now and then we could shake each other up a little more.” Dumfries also highlighted Virgil van Dijk’s authority in the Dutch dressing room, calling him fundamental both as a presence and as a standard‑setter for the squad. On tactical progress he noted: “More and more players are aware that the first ball must be played well and to the right foot. That is a positive development.” His move to Real Madrid is now at an advanced stage, making these remarks one of his final acts as an Inter Milan player before he departs the club that provided his benchmark.
