Depay vs Corinthians: contract clash threatens Libertadores hopes
Memphis Depay has accused Sport Club Corinthians Paulista of reneging on a two‑year contract extension, while the Brazilian club insists the decision to let the Dutch striker go was driven solely by financial prudence after months of negotiations and a drafted agreement that remained unsigned.
Depay joined Corinthians in September 2024 and spent almost two years with the São Paulo side. During his spell he featured in 79 matches and scored 20 goals. He helped the team capture the Paulista and Copa do Brasil in 2025 and the Supercopa Rei in 2026.
Depay's contract dispute
The forward took to his social networks to denounce the club’s decision, writing, “I will not let this behaviour go unpunished.” He claimed an agreement to extend his contract by two years had been approved by the president and the sporting, legal and financial departments. Depay added that “some people decided to breach this commitment,” and warned he might pursue legal action to protect his interests.
He expressed disappointment, stating, “Very disappointed to read that Corinthians decided not to honour our agreement…”. He also said he never wanted to leave the club in this manner and felt forced to react strongly.

Club cites financial health
Corinthians issued an official statement confirming Depay will not remain, emphasizing that the choice was made “uniquely and exclusively in consideration of the financial health of our institution.” The club highlighted the need for strict control of resources and future commitments. It added that the magnitude of the proposed contract was incompatible with the financial balance it seeks to achieve. The decision reflects the broader financial challenges facing clubs in Brazil.
Negotiations had reportedly progressed to a drafted contract, but signing was delayed due to contractual, commercial and economic issues. The sporting department had indicated its intention to resolve the situation so the striker could stay available for the coach. Ultimately, the hierarchy reversed its position after reviewing current and future obligations.
Libertadores match without Depay
The timing of the departure coincides with Corinthians’ upcoming Copa Libertadores round‑of‑16 second leg on Thursday 13 August at the Gigante de Arroyito against Rosario Central. The Brazilian side will contest the fixture without one of its main attacking figures. The club’s statement did not mention any replacement for the striker.

Despite the dispute, Corinthians thanked Depay for his contributions, noting his role in the three titles won during his tenure. The club’s acknowledgement of his sporting impact did not outweigh the economic constraints that led to the contract termination.
