Dibu Martínez stays on holiday, misses Aston Villa’s European final
Goalkeeper Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez is still on holiday, enjoying the final days of his break three weeks after Argentina’s loss in the Copa del Mundo final against España, and will miss Aston Villa’s upcoming European final.
Martínez first flew to his hometown of Mar del Plata before heading to Portugal, the country of his partner Mandinha, where he spent time on the coast recharging after the international disappointment.
Vacation and Instagram fishing
In recent hours Martínez posted an Instagram photo of himself fishing in Portuguese waters with a friend, showing him on a boat casting a line under a sunny sky – a clear moment of relaxation before returning to the pitch.
Club situation and national team future
Aston Villa will face Paris Saint‑Germain in the Supercopa Europea in Salzburg, with Dutch keeper Marco Bizot set to start in Martínez’s absence; the Argentine is expected back before Villa’s Premier League opener on 23 August against Brighton following a pre‑season friendly on 15 August versus Borussia Mönchengladbach. Villa has already completed six friendlies on an Asian tour, recording results against Walsall, Porto, Real Sociedad, Indonesia XI, Pathum United and Bayern Munich. Two days after the defeat to España, Martínez voiced uncertainty about his role with the national side, saying, "Soñé que la ganábamos devuelta…" and hinting he may soon step aside. Si he answers Lionel Scaloni’s call, his international future will be decided as Argentina prepares a FIFA window from 21 September to 6 October.
