Djemba-Djemba brands FC Nantes season 'catastrophic'

Former FC Nantes midfielder Eric Djemba-Djemba has described the club’s recent season as "catastrophic." Djemba-Djemba, who played for Nantes between 2001 and 2003, made the remarks during an interview with Get French Football News. He also reflected on his career at Manchester United and with the Cameroon national team.

Djemba-Djemba’s comments highlight his critical view of Nantes’ performance in the past campaign. The club finished 17th in Ligue 1, narrowly avoiding relegation. Nantes’ struggles included a nine-match winless run from late November to early February.

The 44-year-old midfielder played 52 matches for Nantes across all competitions. His tenure at the club coincided with a transitional period under manager Raynald Denoueix. Denoueix was replaced mid-season by Angel Marcos, but the change did not halt the decline.

At Manchester United, Djemba-Djemba made 20 appearances under Sir Alex Ferguson between 2003 and 2005. He later played in Qatar, Turkey, and Oman before retiring. His international career included 32 caps for Cameroon, featuring in the 2002 and 2004 Africa Cup of Nations.

Djemba-Djemba’s assessment of Nantes’ season contrasts with the club’s historical status as a Ligue 1 mainstay. The 2023-24 campaign marked only the second time Nantes finished in the bottom half since the 2012-13 season.

Looking ahead, Djemba-Djemba’s comments may fuel debate over Nantes’ managerial direction. The club has appointed three head coaches in the past 12 months.
