Donyell Malen’s World Cup start questioned as Brobbey scores

Donyell Malen entered the 2022 World Cup as the Netherlands’ expected front‑man, yet he failed to find the net in the pre‑tournament friendlies and the first two group games, while teammates Brian Brobbey and Crysencio Summerville each opened their accounts.

Studio Oranje presenter Raj van Pareren asked ex‑professional Timo Letschert whether Malen had lost his starting place. The discussion centred on Malen’s lack of goals in the tournament so far.

"Die moet nu even achteraan aansluiten. Dat is de voetbalwereld en die is gewoon keihard. Soms zijn het net de details. Hij heeft wel wat kansjes gehad en als die er wel invliegen, dan was hij de man geweest. Dan had Brobbey nooit zijn kans gekregen", said Letschert during the segment.

Letschert explained that the football world is unforgiving and that fine details decide opportunities. He noted that Malen had had chances and, had they materialised, he would have been the man.

He added that without Malen’s impact, Brobbey would never have received his chance, highlighting the competitive dynamic among the three attackers.

Viewers are invited to watch Studio Oranje for the surprising Dutch standouts. The programme is described as a strong holder that distances itself and offers more.

The segment aired at 13:45. Many observers had expected Malen to lead the Netherlands’ attack.
