England face full‑back dilemma as Reece James skips Panama prep

Chelsea captain Reece James will miss England’s final World Cup group match against Panama after sitting out Friday’s training, with the 26‑year‑old dealing with a hamstring problem. He had featured in the 4‑2 win over Croatia and the 0‑0 draw with Ghana.

Thomas Tuchel’s England side aim to secure top spot in Group L, but James is the only squad member who missed Friday’s training session. The Football Association confirmed the Chelsea captain is “following his own programme” and will not be risked.

Earlier, natural back‑up Tino Livramento withdrew because of a calf injury. Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah was called up to replace him in the squad.

If James is unavailable, Djed Spence could be shifted to right‑back, while Nico O’Reilly is likely to return at left‑back. Tuchel also listed Jarell Quansah as a versatile option who can cover either full‑back position.

Midfielder Declan Rice took part in the same training after being spotted with a bandaged calf following the Ghana draw. Arsenal teammate Bukayo Saka is pushing for a start after recovering from an Achilles problem.

Marcus Rashford may replace Anthony Gordon on the left wing, and Kobbie Mainoo is an alternative in midfield if Tuchel decides not to risk Rice.

John Stones started the win over Croatia but was on the bench for the goalless stalemate with Ghana. Both Ezri Konsa and Marc Guehi helped England keep a clean sheet in that match.

England sit top of their group on four points, level with Ghana but ahead on goal difference, while Croatia trail by a point.

With the knockout stages looming, Tuchel faces a dilemma over the full‑back line ahead of the Panama clash. The squad’s depth will be tested as England seek to maintain their group‑lead.
