Essex Police Receive New Information on David Sullivan Allegations

Essex Police said on Thursday it had received new information concerning West Ham United co-owner David Sullivan after allegations of sexually exploitative behaviour dating back to the 1980s. The force added that contact and inquiries are now under way. Police indicated it is not known whether the new information is linked to the seven women featured in the Times and BBC investigation published earlier this week. The two‑year investigation accused Sullivan of pressuring young or aspiring models in their late teens or early twenties at his Daily Sport and Sunday Sport newspapers. Several women claimed Sullivan abused his power as the newspaper boss to obtain sex with them. The 77‑year‑old quit as chairman of the east London football club over the weekend and categorically denies all of the claims. The Independent Football Regulator said it is in contact with West Ham United seeking information about Sullivan’s suitability as a co‑owner. Downing Street described the allegations as harrowing and said it was right for police to assess the claims. The Metropolitan Police disclosed a separate investigation into an alleged taking of indecent images and sexual exploitation in London and Essex in the 1980s, led by specialist detectives from its rape and serious sexual offences team. Essex Police previously investigated a non‑recent sexual offence report from the Met in 2023 and reviewed further claims from 2008 and 2021 before deciding no further action was needed. Sullivan issued a statement denying the allegations, calling them sensationalised by the media, and referenced his background in the adult industry. He also clarified a negotiated agreement with the Football Association, stating it was not a disciplinary ban but a temporary measure unrelated to his football duties.
