Fabrizio Romano denies Darwin Núñez Liverpool move amid free‑transfer rumours
Fabrizio Romano said on his YouTube channel that there is no ongoing transfer talk between Darwin Núñez and Liverpool, despite rumours that the 26‑year‑old forward could leave Al‑Hilal on a free transfer after his £46.3 million move from Liverpool in August 2025.
The circulating report claimed Núñez would rejoin Liverpool just one year after his move to Saudi Arabia. Uruguayan media suggested the striker would be permitted to leave Al‑Hilal on a free transfer, a scenario some analysts said would fit Liverpool’s squad needs and generate profit.
Romano addressed the speculation on his YouTube channel, stating, “Guys, with maximum respect to those sources close to the Uruguayan national team, close to the club or whatever, my information is that those close to Darwin and sources close to Darwin’s camp deny this information.” He added that “those close to Darwin Núñez say that it’s not true – there’s nothing ongoing with Darwin Núñez and Liverpool.”
Romano’s comments reflect the denial from sources close to the Uruguayan striker’s camp. The information contradicts the earlier rumors linking him with Liverpool.
Núñez is currently a free agent after mutually terminating his contract with Al‑Hilal of the Saudi Pro League, where he arrived for £46.3 million in August 2025, at the end of the domestic season. During his stint he recorded nine goals in 24 appearances before being removed from the active league squad to accommodate French forward Karim Benzema.
He featured in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, being named in Marcelo Bielsa’s starting eleven for Uruguay’s Group H opener against Saudi Arabia on 15 June 2026. Núñez was substituted at half‑time in a match that ended 1–1.
His free‑transfer status has sparked speculation that Liverpool could sign him as a replacement for the injured Hugo Ekitike. Other Premier League clubs, including Chelsea and Newcastle United, have also been linked with the Uruguayan forward.
The summer transfer window will determine whether Núñez secures a new club, with Liverpool and other interested parties monitoring his availability. Until an official agreement is announced, the situation remains unresolved.
