FC Twente draws Ferencvaros as Europa League opponent after Vojvodina tie

FC Twente discovered their opponent for the second qualifying round of the Europa League after the draw on Wednesday afternoon. The Dutch side will face the winner of the tie between Serbian FK Vojvodina and Hungarian Ferencvárosi TC, scheduled for 23 and 30 July.

Because Twente was placed in group 1, they avoided drawing several top clubs, including Portuguese side Benfica. Other potential opponents listed were FC Viktoria Plzen from the Czech Republic, FC Midtjylland from Denmark, RSC Anderlecht from Belgium, the winner of the Qarabag–Vestri tie, and the winner of the Vojvodina–Ferencvaros tie.

Ultimately, Twente will meet the winner of the Vojvodina versus Ferencvaros matchup. The Vojvodina–Ferencvaros tie has not yet been played, leaving the exact opponent undecided.

Vojvodina is not a new opponent for Dutch clubs; two years ago it faced Ajax in the Europa League qualifiers. In 2016, FC Twente's former coach John van den Brom, then at AZ, also played Vojvodina in the same stage, with Vojvodina failing to win on both occasions.

Ferencvaros last met a Dutch side in 2015 when it played Go Ahead Eagles. The Hungarian club proved too strong over the two legs.

Ferencvaros has been dominant in Hungary in recent seasons and reached the Europa League round of 16 last season. Vojvodina finished second in the Serbian league last season.

Twente will miss left‑back Mats Rots for the tie, as he completed a move to German Hoffenheim. Aske Adelgaard has already been introduced as his successor.

Further transfer negotiations are expected in the coming weeks. These will take place before the two legs on 23 and 30 July.
