Fenerbahce-OL Paulo Fonseca warns against complacency for return leg
Paulo Fonseca, the Portuguese coach of Olympique Lyonnais, praised the 1-1 draw against Fenerbahce on Tuesday in Istanbul, but warned that believing the return leg will be easier is dangerous as the Turkish side remain clear favourites in the Ligue des champions tie.
First‑leg draw versus return‑leg reality
The opening encounter in Istanbul finished level at 1-1. Loïs Openda starred for Olympique Lyonnais, while Mason Greenwood supplied the equaliser for Fenerbahce.
Fonseca said the ideal result would have been a win, but acknowledged it was not possible against a clearly favourite side. He added he was satisfied with what his players had achieved.
The 53‑year‑old Portuguese coach stressed there were no regrets, noting the team executed everything well. He praised the collective effort despite the narrow margin.
He reiterated that Fenerbahce remain the favourite for qualification, citing their high quality and individual talent. Fonseca warned that thinking the return leg will be easier is dangerous.
Fonseca cautioned against overconfidence, insisting Lyon will fight for qualification until the final minute. He likened the tie to a David‑versus‑Goliath clash.
Despite the backing of Groupama Stadium supporters for the Wednesday return match, Fonseca does not expect Olympique Lyonnais to be favourites. He noted that members of After Foot expressed regrets, a sentiment he does not share.
