FIFA President Infantino silences Champions League and Europa League for Jesus de Miguel

While moments of silence were held in the Champions League and the Europa League for the late Jesus de Miguel, fans gathered at CD Tenerife's stadium to pay the final tribute to the Spanish footballer. The somber mood spread across the European competitions as the football world mourned together.

Reactions from clubs and stars

Following the tragic death of Spanish footballer Jesus de Miguel, FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed his sympathy.

In a statement he wrote: “His death is a genuine tragedy, and he will be painfully missed by his family, his friends, and everyone who knew him. On behalf of FIFA and the global football community, we extend our sincere condolences to his family, his relatives, and everyone at CD Tenerife during this incredibly difficult time.”

De Miguel passed away on Tuesday morning in the hospital after being injured in a hard collision during the second-division match between CD Tenerife and FC Andorra.

UEFA announced moments of silence for all European cup matches this week.

The Spanish football association RFEF cancelled the women's and men's cup matches on Tuesday as a sign of respect and solidarity.

Champions League clubs also held a minute of silence for the deceased player.

Several Spanish clubs, including Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, as well as numerous Bundesliga teams, expressed their condolences on social media.

In an Instagram post from CD Tenerife, Spanish sports stars Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz offered their condolences.

Fans gathered at CD Tenerife's stadium, laying scarves and flowers in honor of De Miguel.

At 6:45 p.m., two fixtures began after the minute of silence; later in the evening, seven more matches, including Feyenoord‑Internazionale, were on the schedule.

The Spanish cup matches that were scheduled from Tuesday to Thursday were postponed, while the Champions League and other European club competitions continued as planned.
