Financial limits force Angers to lose Koffi as Lens reshapes
Goalkeeper Hervé Koffi confirmed on Wednesday that he will depart RC Lens after his season‑long loan at SCO Angers, with his contract at the Ligue 1 side set to run until 2028 but the club indicating he will not be retained this summer.
Koffi excelled on loan from RC Lens last season, prompting SCO Angers to hope for a permanent transfer. However, imposed financial restrictions prevented the club from finalising the deal, and they instead secured Anthony Lopes on a free transfer after his contract expired at FC Nantes.
Returning to his parent club, Koffi now faces a blocked path to the first team as Robin Risser is established as the preferred goalkeeper. The competition limits Koffi’s immediate playing opportunities at Lens.
His strong performances for Les Sang et Or earned him a place in Didier Deschamps’ FIFA World Cup squad. In the France national team he is listed as a displaceable No. 1 option.
L’Équipe reported that Lens will not retain Koffi this summer, and the publication noted that three clubs are monitoring the Burkina Faso international. The story was detailed by journalist Luke Entwistle.
Koffi’s contract with the Ligue 1 club runs until 2028, meaning Lens would have to negotiate a transfer or release him before that date. The decision frees up a roster spot and wage budget for the club.
For SCO Angers, the signing of Anthony Lopes provides a new first‑choice goalkeeper after Koffi’s departure. Koffi, meanwhile, will seek a new club where he can compete for regular playing time.
