Flamengo cuts ties with Rayan Lucas as four‑year Alverca deal unfolds

In a decisive move, Flamengo have agreed to transfer 21‑year‑old midfielder Rayan Lucas to Portuguese side Alverca, with the player set to sign a four‑year contract and travel to Portugal for his presentation. The deal marks the end of his stint at the Brazilian giants.

Rayan Lucas saw limited minutes under head coach Leonardo Jardim and was not listed for any matches following the World Cup (Copa do Mundo) break, prompting questions about his future at the club. His lack of playing time fueled speculation about a possible exit.

The negotiation was first disclosed by journalist Venê Casagrande, who reported the impending departure. The information quickly spread through the club’s media channels, confirming the transfer’s authenticity.

Flamengo will not receive an immediate financial payment, but the club retained 50% of the player’s economic rights, eyeing a future sale profit. The agreement was officially sealed on Wednesday, finalising the terms of the move.

Rayan had left Flamengo in June of the previous year to join Sporting, where he made 23 appearances, started 20 matches and recorded one assist. His spell in Portugal added valuable senior experience before the Alverca switch.

His contract with Flamengo originally ran until 2028, indicating the club’s long‑term commitment before deciding to part ways. The early termination reflects the technical staff’s assessment of his role.

Initially, Flamengo aimed to loan the midfielder, with the technical team concluding he would not feature in the first‑team plans. Although Athletic submitted a loan proposal that Flamengo accepted, Rayan’s representatives preferred the European club Alverca, sealing the permanent move.

Rayan Lucas has long been hailed as one of Flamengo’s brightest academy prospects, featuring in the Under‑20 Libertadores champion squads of 2024 and 2025 and the 2024 world champion side. He joined the club in 2016 and survived the tragic Ninho do Urubu fire in 2019 at age 14; today only teammate Dyogo Alves remains from that cohort.

Amid the transfer news, fans continue to wonder whether Luiz Henrique could still feature for Flamengo, a question that remains open as the club reshapes its midfield options.
