Francisco Conceicao rejects Portugal bench role ahead of World Cup

Francisco Conceicao has spoken out against his supersub role with Portugal’s national team. The winger insists he wants to be known simply as Francisco Conceicao, not as a player who makes brief late appearances. He highlighted his consistent Juventus starting berth as proof of his ambition.

Conceicao’s frustration stems from competition on the wings from Bernardo Silva, Rafael Leão, João Félix and Pedro Neto. Despite limited minutes, he made an impact at the recent tournament against the Democratic Republic of Congo, entering in the 45th minute. The appearance marked a milestone: he became the first Portuguese son to follow his father as an international at a major tournament.

At club level, Conceicao has scored three goals and provided five assists in 31 appearances for Juventus this season. Between 2022 and 2024, he was under contract at Ajax, where he made 31 appearances and scored 12 goals. His club form contrasts with his national team role, where he has often featured as a late substitute.

He also defended Cristiano Ronaldo after the veteran’s recent criticism. "Cristiano is an example because of the hunger he shows every day, as if it were his last session. I don’t think anyone is like him in that position," Conceicao said. "We are not obliged to pass the ball to him. I give it to whoever is in the best position. He is still part of the team to help us, and I think we need all individual talents to work for the collective."
