Frankfurt intensifies hunt as Hütter eyes U21 full‑back Baum
Eintracht Frankfurt’s new head coach Adi Hütter has singled out Germany U21 full‑back Elias Baum after a strong start to the club’s training camp, praising the 20‑year‑old’s power and work rate and confirming Frankfurt will now examine the prospect more closely.
Hütter said the youngster’s potential has never been in doubt, noting that numerous Bundesliga clubs have already shown interest. This underscores the high regard scouts have for his abilities.
Observers across the league have highlighted Baum’s physical attributes. They also praised his relentless work ethic, reinforcing the coach’s assessment.
Last season Baum featured only sporadically, making five substitute appearances. Most of those came as late‑time‑killing replacements.
The recent departures of Nathaniel Brown to Bayern Munich and Rasmus Kristensen to FC Midtjylland have left Frankfurt short on both flanks. This intensifies the club’s need for defensive reinforcements.
Primarily a right‑back, Baum can also cover the left side vacated by Brown. He can operate slightly higher on the right and could partner with the struggling Nnamdi Collins.
Baum is valued at €4 million. Talks about a move to Ajax have been paused after his strong camp performance, and Frankfurt have delayed their own search for a new right‑back to reassess him.
“Elias has power, punch, and drive,” Hütter told Sport. “That’s why I’m not surprised that other clubs are interested in him. He’s a workhorse and always covers ground. He needs to channel that into more tangible results, especially when it comes to crosses.”
Frankfurt’s defence was notoriously poor last season, leaving the club eager for reinforcement on both sides. The coaching staff hope a player like Baum could help stabilise the back line.
