Free agent Thomas Meunier: Belgian clubs balance experience and age

🇧🇪

Thomas Meunier, the 82‑cap Belgian right‑back, is now a free agent after his stint with LOSC Lille. At 35, he can explore new challenges, with Royal Antwerp and RSC Anderlecht cited as potential suitors. The question is whether either club can secure his services.

Meunier recently indicated that the door remains open for Standard and Club Brugge, confirming that other Jupiler Pro League sides are also options. He emphasised that he runs his own career and negotiates his contracts personally.

Both Royal Antwerp and RSC Anderlecht are expected to begin the next season with very young squads, creating a demand for seasoned players. An experienced defender who knows the league could provide the stability they seek.

Meunier will turn 35 at the start of September, making his potential return later in his career than Thorgan Hazard. Hazard faced early criticism for struggling to maintain consecutive performances, yet he recorded 21 goals and 21 assists in 98 matches for RC Lens. He also contributed 15 goals and 10 assists for RSCA across all competitions last season.

Meunier could immediately bolster the defence and guide younger teammates, a role once filled by Jan Vertonghen despite his physical setbacks. Toby Alderweireld, meanwhile, delivered the title‑winning goal for Antwerp, illustrating the impact a veteran can have.

Supporters of both clubs quickly referenced Meunier’s affection for Club Brugge and highlighted his less impressive outings for the Red Devils, notably against Egypt. Nevertheless, his overall level remains high within the Pro League.

A Belgian return therefore represents a genuine outside chance for whichever club signs him. In the Jupiler Pro League, Meunier still constitutes an absolute top‑flight addition.
