Frenkie de Jong says Spain can win World Cup
Frenkie de Jong opened the Netherlands' 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a 2-2 draw against Japan. Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands were on course for victory before a late set‑piece goal denied them all three points. “Spain has a very good team. I think they definitely have a chance of winning,” de Jong said.
De Jong dictated possession from midfield and provided much of the Dutch side’s creativity. His performance was highlighted as one of the standouts despite the draw.
Speaking to COPE, de Jong expressed pride in representing his country and confidence in the squad’s objectives. He added that the team ignores external rankings and aims to win the World Championship.
De Jong noted that Spain, featuring eight FC Barcelona players including teenager Lamine Yamal, are among the tournament favourites. The Dutch midfielder remained optimistic about the Netherlands’ chances despite the setback.
