From Belgian bench to Madeira: Gavriel seeks a fresh start
24‑year‑old Cypriot winger Stavros Gavriel has terminated his three‑year spell at Zulte Waregem to join C.D. Nacional of Madeira on a three‑season contract, ending his Belgian adventure after 65 games, nine goals and twelve assists. The move follows a €300,000 transfer from APOEL Nicosia in January 2024.
Gavriel signed for Zulte Waregem in January 2024, leaving APOEL Nicosia where he completed his youth training and broke into the first team. The Belgian side paid roughly €300,000 for the right‑winger.
During his time at Zulte Waregem, Gavriel made 65 appearances, scoring nine goals and providing twelve assists, and was a key figure in the Challenger Pro League. In the 2024/25 season he enjoyed a regular starting place and showcased his abilities repeatedly.
The following season his role shifted to that of a substitute, with only seven starts and fourteen appearances off the bench, preventing a definitive breakthrough at the highest level.
Internationally, Gavriel is a four‑cap Cyprus international who debuted in October 2023, and Transfermarkt values him at €600,000.
Having passed his medical and physical tests, Gavriel will join Nacional’s first training on Friday under coach João Gião. He hopes the move to Madeira will grant him more playing minutes, a regular role and a platform to further launch his career.
