From Sparta's stalwart to PSV's surplus: Drommel's uncertain path
Joël Drommel enjoys a full season as Sparta Rotterdam’s undisputed starter, yet his future at PSV Eindhoven looks bleak. The Dutch club has no place for him, will keep him training with the first‑team squad, and is actively seeking a transfer in the coming weeks.
During the 2023‑24 campaign Drommel featured in all 34 Eredivisie matches for Sparta Rotterdam. He recorded eleven clean sheets and conceded sixty‑two goals, a performance that attracted interest from other clubs.
PSV announced that Drommel continues to train with the A‑team and remains welcome, but the club is evaluating whether he can secure a move abroad in the next weeks. The Eindhovens Dagblad reported the club’s intention to explore a transfer.
PSV originally secured Drommel’s services from FC Twente in the summer of 2021 for a fee of €3.5 million. The goalkeeper never established himself as the first‑choice stopper for the Eindhoven side.
Across his PSV tenure Drommel amassed sixty‑six league appearances, kept twenty clean sheets and allowed seventy‑four goals. Those figures underline his limited impact compared with his regular role at Sparta.
The contrast between Drommel’s consistent minutes at Sparta and his peripheral status at PSV highlights the club’s willingness to move on. His next destination will likely be decided before the summer window closes.
