Gakpo's Liverpool future in doubt as Muñoz arrives

Cody Gakpo's future at Liverpool is now uncertain as the club bolsters its attacking options and other teams, including Tottenham Hotspur, show interest in the Dutch forward, who has scored seven goals and provided five assists in 36 Premier League appearances despite a strong start to his Euro campaign.

During the European Championship, Gakpo was one of the stand‑out performers for the Netherlands, contrasting with his inconsistent season at Liverpool. In the Premier League he started most matches but managed only seven goals and five assists across 36 games.

After the Netherlands' win over Sweden, Gakpo explained the contrast, saying, “That is a good question. It is naturally a bit different. The freedom I have here is different,” referring to his role at Liverpool. The interview took place immediately after the Saturday clash with Sweden.

Liverpool have already reinforced their squad by signing Osasuna winger Victor Muñoz for a reported €40 million. The club is also monitoring RB Leipzig forward Yan Diomande as a potential addition.

The emergence of 17‑year‑old Rio Ngumoha has also been noted as part of Liverpool's youth pipeline. His development adds further competition for attacking places.

The BBC suggested that increased competition could give Gakpo a chance to excel, likening the situation to when Luis Díaz featured for Liverpool. The outlet highlighted that the new arrivals might push Gakpo to raise his level.

For the first time since his arrival in 2023, the BBC reported that Gakpo could leave Liverpool, with several clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, reportedly interested. The report indicated that his future is now being actively discussed.

If the competition intensifies, Gakpo will need to improve his output to retain a regular spot. Liverpool's upcoming season will therefore be a decisive period for the Dutch international.
