Gales pulls support from Infantino over Mundial commercial plan
En a decisive move last week, the Asociación Galesa de Fútbol announced that Gales is withdrawing its public support for FIFA president Gianni Infantino after he presented a plan to sell shares of the Mundial to private investors and commercial.
The announcement arrived shortly after Infantino unveiled a proposal to commercialise the Copa del Mundo, a move that sparked immediate controversy among football stakeholders.
In an official communiqué the federation confirmed it is pulling its backing ahead of the FIFA presidential election for the 2027‑2031 cycle, signalling a clear break before the vote.
The Welsh statement criticised recent failures in governance, leadership, values, team management and communication, arguing that these shortcomings have eroded confidence in Mr Infantino.

It added that neglecting the primary interests of football constitutes an error the federation cannot accept, underscoring its commitment to the sport’s core principles.
Infantino responded by describing the initiative as “an opportunity, not an obligation” for commercialising the Mundial, insisting it would generate new revenue streams without compromising football’s fundamental values.
The previous Wednesday, FIFA announced its intention to sell a 20 % stake in the newly created FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), a subsidiary designed to manage commercial operations and events such as the Mundial.

The following Thursday, UEFA issued a strong reprimand, warning that national federations would refuse to participate in FIFA competitions if the proposal to sell Mundial shares remained in force.
On Friday, Gianni Infantino issued a fresh statement saying FIFA would abandon the plan after “listening carefully to all parties”, a reversal aimed at preserving unity among its members.
