Gavi backs Ronaldo as Spain prepares for Portugal clash
Barcelona midfielder Gavi has publicly defended Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of Spain’s World Cup Round‑of‑16 match against Portugal on Monday, insisting the Portuguese captain remains one of the game’s greatest and can still decide outcomes. He said the veteran striker’s influence is still decisive for any team he represents.
When asked about criticism that Ronaldo’s presence might be a disadvantage for Portugal, Gavi replied, “I always hear that, but from people who aren’t on his team, from fans,” and added, “Those who are on his team have immense respect for him.”
Gavi also emphasized his view of Ronaldo’s quality, stating, “Obviously, Cristiano is one of the best players in history and he can make the difference at any moment.”
The Barcelona star revealed he has not spoken to his close friend João Cancelo before the game, explaining, “No, the truth is we haven’t spoken. I think both he and I are focused and concentrated on the game.”
World Cup tour gives Barcelona director Deco a chance to track targets
Gavi acknowledged Portugal as Spain’s toughest opponent so far, describing them as “a great team, with good players” and urging his teammates to follow the manager’s plan and work together to win the tie. He noted Portugal’s strong midfield but highlighted Spain’s depth, saying the squad includes “very good players, both those who start and those on the bench,” and that this talent should be displayed in the match. Gavi admitted that last year’s Nations League loss to Portugal provides extra motivation, recalling that the previous encounter was decided on penalties and that Spain felt they deserved to win. Spain and Portugal meet on Monday for a place in the World Cup quarter‑finals, a fixture widely expected to be one of the knockout stage’s most anticipated clashes.
