German press turns on Joey Veerman after disappointing Dortmund show
In the cold night in Bodø, Norway, the German press saw a completely different side of Joey Veerman than the impression he made immediately after his move from PSV to Borussia Dortmund. During the 1-0 defeat to Bodø/Glimt the midfielder seemed to struggle, which set the tone for the evening's analysis.
German media find Veerman’s play disappointing
Spox described Veerman’s first half as a series of “important interventions in his own penalty area”, but noted that “the Dutchman's play lacked impulses”. The outlet called the performance “rather disappointing” and noted that the player was substituted after an hour.
After sixty minutes Dortmund made a quadruple substitution; Veerman was replaced by Félix Nmecha, which according to Ruhr 24 “produced an improvement”. The German newspaper sport.de gave Veerman the lowest possible rating and stated that “real control remained rare” and he “often was a step too late on the ball”.
From promising debut to disappointing evening: Veerman under German criticism
The defeat to Bodø/Glimt marks Dortmund’s first Champions League loss in this competitive phase. Ahead of the international break the team beat Villarreal (3‑2), with Veerman playing the full match and delivering a strong performance. Dortmund now still has away games to play against Sabah Baku, Real Betis, Arsenal, Internazionale, Aston Villa and AEK Athens.
