Germany overtakes Brazil for World Cup goals record
Germany's total World Cup goals rose to 239 after a 7‑1 victory over Curaçao, overtaking Brazil's 238. The match, played on Sunday, added seven goals to Germany's tally. Brazil had entered the tournament holding 26 records, one of which is now lost.
Argentina sit third with 152 World Cup goals. Germany's goals‑per‑game average remains the best, having played only 21 tournaments compared with Brazil's 23 appearances. Brazil has participated in all 23 editions of the FIFA World Cup.
Germany missed the inaugural 1930 World Cup and was barred from the 1950 qualifiers due to a post‑war FIFA sanction, which was lifted after the tournament in Brazil. The nation's most prolific campaign came in 1954, when it scored 25 goals en route to the title in Switzerland. During that edition Germany lost 8‑3 to Hungary, featuring Puskás and Kocsis, before winning the final 3‑2. Germany has recorded ten or more goals in 13 World Cups, a figure matched only by Brazil.
The Curaçao win gave Germany its fourth World Cup match with seven or more goals, joining Hungary in that category. Previous high‑scoring games include a 7‑1 win over Brazil, an 8‑0 triumph over Saudi Arabia in 2002, and a 7‑2 victory against Turkey in 1954. Photo credit: Gabriel Bouys.
