Gundogan involved as GSS eyes Montpellier takeover

British investment fund GSS is in advanced talks to acquire Ligue 2 club Montpellier HSC. Former Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is part of the GSS-led bid. Laurent Nicollin, Montpellier HSC owner, confirmed interest from an unnamed British buyer in April. Nicollin sent a ten-page document to major French investment banks, stating he does not want to fully sell the club but may accept a minority stake. "We are throwing a hook into the sea," Nicollin wrote, adding pragmatism is required given the situation. He also noted, "Our fall has to be less painful at the end of the year." Montpellier HSC were relegated to Ligue 2 for the 2025/26 season and failed to reach the playoffs. An agreement between GSS and Nicollin is nearing completion, though terms remain unclear. The deal could involve a full takeover or minority share purchase. Gundogan’s involvement was confirmed by L’Équipe. Daniel Karbassiyoon, formerly of Arsenal, Burnley and Ipswich Town, is also part of the bid team. Luke Entwistle of GFFN reported the developments.
