Hamza Abdelkarim Signs Permanent Deal with Barcelona
Egyptian striker Hamza Abdelkarim has signed a permanent contract with FC Barcelona until 2029. The 18‑year‑old joins Barcelona after a loan from Al Ahly that turned into a full transfer. His move follows a surprise call‑up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Barcelona accelerated interest in Abdelkarim during the Under‑20 World Cup in October 2025. Head of scouting João Amaral led the push after the striker’s strong showing, while former player Deco helped persuade him. The club presented a clear sporting project and a pathway through its structure.
Negotiations with Al Ahly proved difficult; the Egyptian club initially resisted any exit and demanded a contract renewal before a loan. Abdelkarim extended his deal with Al Ahly, allowing Barcelona to trigger a €1.5 million buy‑option plus add‑ons, converting the loan into a permanent transfer.
Barcelona assured Abdelkarim that quality and personality could earn a first‑team chance, citing examples such as Gavi, Fermin, Pau Cubarsi and Lamine Yamal. Sporting director Deco emphasized the club’s track record of promoting academy talent.
Hansi Flick has been told to monitor Abdelkarim during pre‑season, indicating confidence in his potential. The striker now faces the challenge of earning a place in Barcelona’s senior squad.
